 Ft. Benning Humorous Story

In 1968, I had been sent to Ft. Benning to be in the 313th Combat Engineer Battalion, stationed at the Sand Hill area of the base. Our barracks had been built during WWII, so made of wood and 2 stories tall. At end of barracks on 2nd floor, facing the company street, was a small balcony. There was a door that opened to the balcony, but no stairs led from it to the ground.

One day I had barracks duty on 2nd floor where I slept. I had mopped the floor and needed to empty the mop bucket. Being next to the door to the balcony, I decided to throw the dirty mop bucket water out the door, rather than carry it downstairs to the latrine/shower and empty it there.

So, I opened the door stepped on the balcony and looked down to make sure no one was under it. I stepped back, bent over, picked up mop bucket and gave it a heave, throwing the water over the rail to ground below.

Next, I could hear the water hit the sidewalk below and then someone exclaiming quite loudly, "WHAT THE S__T!!!!!!!!Who the h-ll's up there, come down now right now!!!!!! In the second or two it took for me to turn around, step and pickup and throw the bucket of water, someone had walked out of the first floor door beneath me. I had made a direct hit.

My choices were to run for it or take it like a man. After a few seconds of thought, while the guy below continued yelling, I stepped out on the balcony to confront my victim. Crap, I had hit one of the bigger Staff Sergeants in our company. He certainly was P.O'd. and this private had one very irrate sergeant, waiting to get his hands on me.

Of course, upon seeing me, he ordered me to join him outside and other words I'd not care to repeat here. My reply after his words were, No way I'm coming down there while you are so mad......More yelling/threats from the sergeant. I then pleaded in a quakeing voice, if I had done it on purpose, do you think I'd have come out on the balcony....for God's Sake, it was an accident....that I'd looked out the door before throwing the water and no one was below.

The sergeant thought about what I had said for a few moments and then agreed that no one would be dumb enough to throw water on him on purpose and then show himself.

The sergeant then dismissed me saying he'd be keeping an eye on me in the future and left to change his fatigues. I did avoid that sergeant the rest of my time in the unit.
