 1917 Spandau Gew 98 S/42K
Just what is this rascal

Hello all.

I'm working through a fairly large collection of rifles for a local collector and I've stumbled on an oddball that I cannot positively identify and need some help.

It is a 1917 Spandau Gew 98 that has been shortened to a stub nosed mannlicher style stock and marked S/42K on the side.

It also has the 1920 Permission stamp on the receiver and the stock.

Pics posted and I am hoping to find some help nailing down the true identity of this rifle.

Thanks,

Don

S/42K according to this reference is a 1934 Obie

http://mausercentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11338

Is the stock stamped S/42K or the reciever?

It is maqrked Spandau 1917 on he receiver ring with the Weimar 1920 permission stamp. Stamped Gew.98 on the left side of the receiver and S/42K on the right side under the side of the rear sight.

Nose cap?

I would like to see some close ups of the nose cap, are there any proof marks on it? Most interesting.

Thanks, Pete

Your's is obviously a home conversion. I suspect they all are though it seems the other two found a way to use the band spring to reatin the nosecape

So then refinishing wouldn't affect the value of it since its already been altered? Where could I find some examples of different nosecaps, any ideas?

Any thoughts as to if these Gew 98 cut-downs are a legitimate military version or are they sporterized variants? I have to set a priced on this one and consign it for the owner.

I doubt seriously it is a military conversion. IMHO, Just another home conversion albeit by a fairly capable person, it looks like they used the band spring to secure the nosecap, a nice touch.

I believe I recall from a long lost thread that these were importer altered years ago to make them more appealing. I want to say it was Springfield Sporters. They were known for painting guns. CIA was also known for making their own altered military sporters.

I can say with 100% certainty that it is not a military issue. It looks like an attempt to make it look like Mauser's Special Range Rifle. I think it would look good if you trimmed the barrel to 21 1/2 inches and remodeled the barrel and stock to accept a 1909 Argentine carbine front sight and nosecap. Then it would definitely look military.
