 Mosin Nagant

Hi all!

not sure if this is the right place but here goes. i already own a very nice m96 Mauser (sporter) but i am thinking of purchasing a Mosin Nagant an associate of mine recommended the Mauser for it's accuracy with the 140 grain projectile, reliability and how cheap it is to run. it is an excellent rifle for Hunting however i would like to know some strong points that the Russian can offer and would it be worth my while in purchasing one. one clear question i have is, what is the difference between hexagonal receivers, round receivers low wall and high wall?

Thank you.

Rifles are cheap, ammo is cheap, and it's fun to shoot. I'm late for work, so I'll explain the diff in receivers when i get home.

You reading this, will be waaay better than me typing it out. When you're done reading it, it's a pre-requirement that you have to watch the movie "Enemy at the Gates". Wink

Mosin Nagant
web page

Check out

www.7.62x54.net

Answers all my questions about Mosin.

I think hex is less available so usually is a little more expensive. Just depends on what arsenal they came from. What are you looking at, a regular 91/30?

And ammo is very cheap! Check out aimsurplus.com 440rds for like $90!!!

Are you in OZ?
You can buy a decent Mosin here in the US for $90. For a shooter or collector, the pre 40's hex receivers are the best.
The Finns captured and rebuilt the Russian rifles into the M-39 using the hex receivers and Sako or Valmet barrels. I haven't found one yet that won't out shoot a Russian rifle.
The hex receivers often have a replaced barrel with a date stamp. The bottom side of the end of the tang will have the receiver's production date.
The M-44 (w/bayo) and M38(wo/bayo) carbines are the most fun to shoot, and the most practical to hunt with.
