Stock Repairing
Small to medium cracks can be glued and clamped
till the glue dries, the glue expands while drying forcing it into
the grain of the wood and crack if its not clamped it could spread
the crack. I would suggest ProBond wood glue by Elmers or Acraglass
used for glass bedding.
Large Cracks need to be evaluated before repairing. Ask yourself
this. Would I trust this stock after its repaired? Is the stock worth
repairing? Mauser military stocks are sold cheap on ebay and by gun
parts dealers. If you answered yes I still want to repair my stock
read on. Examine the crack find the key locations where you can drill
through the crack and into solid wood. Get some threaded brass rod
or small brass screws. Decide how many to use for the size of the
crack. Cover the bare wood inside the crack with your glue , apply
generous amounts of glue in the crack with a brush or pipe cleaner.
Thread in the brass rod or screws while holding the crack closed by
hand or a padded clamp or vice. If using screws get them longer than
needed then cut the head off and file the shaft even with the wood.
Here's some tips if you want to match the glue to your
stock. If you have some sawdust from sanding your stock you can mix
it with your glue to get a close match to your stock. If using Acraglass
it comes with powder dies you can mix with it to get as close as you
can to your stock color. Remember it wont be perfect as the finish
wont stick to the glue if your refinishing the stock.
